KPDL does a lot of steel shooting; I think it's great, even have my own steel target. However, here's a real eye-opening video of a FATAL accident on a range: Target looks to be appropriate distance from shooter, and range looks decent. A lot of our steel also presents targets is a vertical orientation. Wish video showed type of ammo and specific bullet type, but didn't. Strange things happen. Many years ago I was shooting a magnum revolver with cast bullets at a remote dirt bank. While reloading, I found one of my shot bullets laying on the ground right between my feet, with rifling marks and deformed nose. What happened remains a mystery. At the very least, KPDL needs to review design of our steel, damage to such, and enforce mandatory safe distances from shooter to target.

Wow that’s tragic! You are right that the distance didn’t look too bad with hanging targets like that.
Watching the video, you can see where the bullet defects off the hanger to the ground, then bounces again back up to the shooter. If that whole bay hadn’t been gravel, it might not have bounced back.

I've been looking up web info on shooting steel, and conclude that in an ideal world, KPDL would be replacing all damaged steel with safely designed AR500 or 550 steel. World isn't ideal, so this option would cost a bundle. However, there are a number of things we could easily do that would cost little to nothing that would improve safety of shooting steel. Target placement, target angle from vertical, ammo selections (including banning certain ammo), and upgraded eye and protective clothing choices are low hanging fruit. The FBI has put out recommendations to range masters and trainers with suggestions, as have a bunch of target manufacturers. Food for thought.

Well, good old YouTube has age restricted the video. Look for John Correia's Active Self Protection, and look at recent videos. Should be accessible.

Scary for sure Shooting is dangerous Shooting steel is more dangerous
It's an "accepted" risk to shoot them for sure However KPDL can do things to minimize the risk the best we can.
If anybody sees what they consider damaged steel PLEASE bring to attention of any RO/board member so it can be investigated and repaired/replaced.
If anybody sees anything they consider unsafe PLEASE bring to attention of any RO/board member so it can be investigated
