My 2c for the month. Suggestion: Change rule for BUG guns that have max barrel length of 3.25 inch, NO red dot, and single stack autos(stagger stack .380 Ruger...ok) Back-up guns are for point blank defense; hence, red dots are superfluous and impractical for a CONCEALED BUG gun. In addition, lessen distances to targets to REAL world distance you would be using a 5/6 shot snub nose or little .380/9mm.

In addition, lessen distances to targets to REAL world distance you would be using a 5/6 shot snub nose or little .380/9mm. You say a BUG as a close-quarters only weapon ("for point blank defense"). IMO, the BUG as a secondary weapon. If my primary weapon fails, I go to my BUG. The bad guys could be 50 yards away or 10 feet away. I would need to use my BUG at either range. So for a longer-range target, I do see a real need for red dots on a BUG. If the bay guy is within 10 feet, I don't even have to aim, primary weapon or BUG. There are many rules for the BUG match, one being drawing from concealment. Please bring up your feelings on the BUG match at the yearly meeting in September.

I’m with Rob here. Backup gun is subjective to the situation. If my primary was a bolt gun and now I need closer range, my backup may be a carbine.

I'm with Rick. Your backup gun is not there to take the place of your primary weapon. It is there so that if you lose or do not have your primary weapon, you can fight your way out of the kill zone. I carried a backup gun for 18 years, and the first thing it had to be was comfortable to carry, otherwise I wouldn't carry it. Long barrels, and bulky dot sights don't help with the comfort, or concealment of a BUG. I could also talk about what and where some guys carried their BUG's. Many were quit ingenious and some were, "really, what were you thinking?", but rarely did you know if someone was carrying a BUG just by looking, you just knew they were. BUG's are meant for leave me alone with your bad breath, distances, not long range arguments. Yeah, I could hit a coke can at 25yds reliably, but the can wasn't shooting back. If the bad guy is 50 yds away from me, then good; gives me more of chance to get out of his kill zone, and be ready if he enters mine. I might even be able to harass the long distance malcontent into ceasing their antisocial behavior with my BUG, but only if necessary. Come on guys, there are national shooting organizations that hold BUG matches, and their rules are stricter than ours for BUG matches. If you don't want to stay inside our current rules that's fine. Just don't expect to be scored with those of us who do want to shoot a PRACTICAL BUG match.
